So many people of high authority do not deserve the power they have acquired. Once, long ago, they very well may have, maybe they never did, but many come to a point where their power is both useless and counterproductive. I consider this to be the delusion that accompanies power. It is not unavoidable but it is highly realistic that any leader will eventually succumb to it, whether they be the leader of a country, a city, a school or a small group of individuals.
Power should, above cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration, be considered the leading cause of blindness in our world today. At first, every democratic leader has a vision to benefit all, but quickly this vision is clouded by the cataracts of their new situation. Suddenly, the individual no longer belongs to the group that he now represents. He becomes removed from the very people he is supposed to be a part of and no longer understands their wants, desires, fears or concerns. Often the opinion of the group represented is unseen or even purposefully ignored, because the leader wants to impress his higher-ups and maintain the power that he has been granted. This leads to an unhappiness of the people, but often these people find themselves unable to do anything to stop their leader. Especially in schools, where a school board and principal govern over the entirety of the student body, there is very little room for student cooperation. Never once have I been asked my opinion on whether or not my teachers should be demoted, fired or acknowledged for their excellence. Never once has a new school proposition been explained to me. Never once has the school shown more support to my endeavors than the endeavors of the football team; and never once have I had a say. I feel unfairly stuck in a system that is unavoidable. I am forced to go to school, and I do enjoy learning, by why should I be held back by a faulty system led by ignorant leaders when I know I have so much more potential? We are stifled by the ignorance and pride of those in charge and something needs to change.
