Week Four

9/27/09- I finished Beowulf today. I find it very interesting that a story from so long ago (it was written anywhere from the 8th century to the early 11th century) can still have ideals that we can understand today. Have we really advanced so little, that we are still using the same themes in literature from 1300 years ago? Or are the themes so important and fundamental that they should not be altered? Good vs. Evil will always be a major theme in books, because it creates a conflict that everyone can understand, but Beowulf also discussed loyalty and patronage which I find very impressive for a book from so long ago.

10/1/09- The second October began, the world suddenly felt very autumnal. I don't know if this is because the weather actually began to change or if, in my mind I have a pre-existing view of October. If the latter is true, then I would be looking for reasons that it would feel like autumn, and I think that may be the case. Like I mentioned last week, I feel nostalgic in the autumn, almost like the conditions of the environment remind me of past events that took place in the same conditions. It's to the point where I look forward to how I feel in the autumn each year, but I don't understand why I like it so much. Normally, its cold and wet but I somehow enjoy it.
