How the time flies...

10/18/09- Recently, a video of the opening to the single-player campaign of the video game, Modern Warfare 2, leaked onto the internet. In this first "level" of the game, the main character is a CIA agent working undercover in a terrorist group as the group attacks an airports. The video depicts the main character shooting and killing innocents running away in terror. According to Activision, this "level" has a warning beforehand of the gruesome content and the option to skip it. I don't truly understand the point of putting such a scene into a video game, unless the scene is so incredibly uncomfortable for the player that they get absolutely no enjoyment from it. Otherwise, gamers will be entertained by the deaths of innocent people. I understand the company wanting to show people a realistic view of terrorism and it's effects, but I don't understand why this has to be a playable portion of the game, instead of a skippable video. What really bothers me, is that people will have the option to skip the portion of the game, but will opt to play it anyway.

10/31/09- Halloween! My friends and I, despite our ages, decided to go trick-or-treating and wears matching costumes. We never fully decided what we dressed up as, but it was along the lines of rainbow ninjas or Arabian Power Rangers. We had a lot of fun, and actually did not receive many comments about our age. However, there was one woman who said something along the lines of, "It's nice to see some people in costumes." She then went on to explain that many kids were going around asking for candy without dressing up. I find it incredible that kids have the nerve to walk around asking for free candy without putting any effort into the activity. I think it shows a lot about the modern generations that the kids of today do not enjoy the holiday for what it is, but rather view it as a greedy adventure for free candy. Another sign of the modern times that I noticed tonight was when a young boy saw our costumes and said, "Why are you dressed up like terrorists?" As a result of our media and adults teaching prejudice to their children, we immediately looked like terrorists to this child because we were wearing t-shirts on our heads that made us look mildly Arabic. Both of these events made me fear for the state of our new generations. If the leaders of tomorrow are characterized by greed and prejudice, what will our future look like?
