Week 9

11/4/09- Time is such a strange thing. It is constantly changing and forming the world around us, yet it is never fully understood. It is the fourth dimension, yet it is incredibly difficult to understand in the form of a shape like the first 3 dimensions. Some say that time is our brains way of making sense of the ever-changing universe and that it is possible that everything in all of time happens at once, but our brains segments it to make sense. If this is true, then our actions really have no effect and our predestined to an extreme. Everything has, is and will be always happening forever, but our minds adjust it to look like a sensical reality. This is a very interesting theory, but too strange and without enough evidence to truly support it. Time also has strange abilities in that it can transform things. As time moves on, decay kicks in. It's impossible to have one without the other. People, structures and even systems crumple under the awesome power of time. But time can also lead to growth as new plants and animals are born and grow up, new structures are built and new governments take place of the old and fallen. Time is the ultimate controller of our world and our perception of our reality.

11/7/09- Language seems to me to be nearly as important as time in shaping the world around us. The bible, the most read book in the world has been translated officially into 6807 languages. This shows the sheer quantity of languages out there if just the Christian population already contains at least 6807. The fact that there are this many ways to view the word and gives each object a name to better understand it astounds me. A single little object could have a countless number of different names to signify what it is, even synonyms within one language or within different dialects of a language. Each culture gives their own meaning behind an object and demonstrates what it means to them through their speech. Language is one of the most perception-forming characteristics of the human mind, and adds diversity through the human race. The only problem with all of this diversity is that it can be difficult to understand one another in times of hardship. The only true language we have among all humans is emotion, and even that can be misinterpreted. However, this doesn't stop humans from finding some way to communicate and learn the language of one another. Learning another language is not like any other school subject. It opens you up to a whole other world that you were previously barred off from, and allows you to see the world from their perspective.
