12/2/09- Surrealism is simply an avant-garde artistic movement that explored the subconscious of the human mind. But how can the subconscious be explored when man cannot experience it? And how does half of modern surrealistic art even apply to the subconscious? I believe that surrealism has been misconstrued and altered in this modern era, and now exists solely as art that is confusion and has little meaning when an explanation is not offered. Sometimes, the message may be obvious. But rarely does this message relate to our subconscious, but rather our society or our active mind. However, there are still many pieces of surrealistic art that make little sense. What is the point of art that doesn’t make any sense, but rather just “looks cool”? The artist seems to not fully understand the purpose of what they are doing and just do it for the enjoyment of the hobby, which makes sense. But now with the rise of the Internet and the increased ease of publishing artwork, a constant flood of junk art that gives little insight and hardly explores the human subconscious covers up the truly brilliant art. I understand doing art as a way of expressing yourself, but I think that art should have some meaning if it is going to be published for the world to see.
12/6/09- Late last night, or early this morning depending on the way you look at it, Ian, Jake and I had a long, detailed discussion about our futures. The main topic was what we want to do with ours lives, what profession we want and what school we want to go to. The general consensus is that none of us really know. Every time we think we have it all planned out, we change our minds within a few months. For example, in the past year I’ve wanted to be a “green” engineer, a graphic designer, and videogame programmer, a hardware designer and a filmographer. It’s frustrating and inconvenient especially when I am trying to pick a school that best fits my spur-of-the-moment “interests”. But is this indecision really a bad thing? It only proves that we are very versatile people with many interests and abilities. It is difficult to decide what you want to do when you are good or enjoy multiple activities and school subjects. So being good at a lot of things leads to indecision, which is a shame because once we decide we’ll be very good at what we do, but we may take so long to decide that it becomes a problem. Being indecisive is dangerous and expensive past high school, and changing majors can be a costly effort. I know that we will figure out what we really want in the end, but how many more times will we change our minds?
